Can one paste just the color grade settings? and letterbox after tilting? was created by megoodyougood
I’m a music producer, just got into video editing, so I don’t know if the problems I’m having is just limited to Final Cut Pro, or the same with all other video editing software, perhaps my trouble with editing is caused by my “music software” mindset, or perhaps, NLEs should be made more like DAWs
In every DAW (I use Logic Pro, also made by Apple) we can choose what effect to copy/paste, we can rearrange the effect chain, and we have automation for changing parameters overtime
here are 3 examples of my issues when editing on Final Cut
I color graded clip A, and want to paste the color grade setting (also, very often I have multiple color wheels, but wish to paste just one particular color wheel) to the rest of my clips, Final Cut only give me the option to paste “all effects”, so all the key burn and distortion filters from clip A, also got pasted to the rest of my clips, why?…
Next is the letterbox, whenever I tilt, crop, key burn a clip, then apply letterbox, it’s just all messed up, because even if I add letterbox after tilting and cropping a clip, the letterbox somehow come before the tilt and crop, and there is no way to rearrange the effects chain so that the letterbox comes after, every time I encounter this problem I have to export the clip with tilt and crop, import the new clip and then letterbox…
then there is the confusing “key frames”, I mean, in DAWs, we have automation, we can see exactly how a parameter is changing over time, and we can adjust it visually, we can also “curve” an automation line, so as to control the speed of “changing over time”, why isn’t there a visual and graphical way to change settings overtime in Final Cut? Yesterday I tried to make a clip go from 0 saturation to 100 saturation over the course of 10 seconds, but with key frames, it’s just hard to control.
I’ve searched all over the net for solutions, but couldn’t find any, so are all NLEs like this, or is it just Final Cut?

Search for this term in the FCP User Guide:
"Keyframe color corrections in Final Cut Pro for Mac"
The following section in the user guide discusses applying specific color corrections to multiple clips via presets.
For a letterbox effect, you could search for info about making your own "adjustment layer" in Motion (it's basically a blank Title), or download one of the many free ones available. Add the adjustment layer over the entire section or complete timeline and add a Letterbox effect to that...
Something like DaVinci Resolve, which was originally a color grading/correction tool, has some advanced features not found in most NLEs, including FCP. There are some 3rd-party tools available for FCP that add more advanced features for color work...

Select any clip that already has the color correction effects applied and type ⌘C to Copy.
Select ALL clips you want to apply the color correction to and type ⌘-Shift-V to Paste Attributes. Select the Color Correction effects from the list in the dialog box that pops up then press the Paste button.
To create a Letterbox, in Generators > Backgrounds, choose Solid Color. Use Effects > Transform > Scale Y (letterbox) or Scale X (pillarbox) to the width or height you need. Go into Effects > Compositing and change the blend mode to Stencil Alpha. It does not matter what the color is.
