Can't re-link project created with proxy files

Hi all,

I've created and edited a video in FCPX in proxy media that I imported, rather than created within FCPX. I assumed (naively) that I'd be able to re-link those files once I'd finished the edit, but am now struggling to make that happen. I keep getting an error message saying "The original file and new file have no shared media range".

Is there a way to get round this and link the full res files to the project without having to start again on the edit and creating the proxies natively in FCPX?

Any help greatly appreciated!!

Is the timecode identical of both files?

This is definitely a timecode issue. I'd wager the proxy clips are all MP4 and start at 00:00:00:00. We'll need a bit more info to be of any help.

A few questions:
1. What's the format of the source (full res) media?
2. Where did this project originate? Imported from what?
3. How were the proxies generated?

I guess the easiest way would be to set the starting timecode of all the originals to zero as well and then relink
Thats a common problem in Sony alpha cameras: proxies start at zero.

Thanks for the responses, that was our assumption with the timecode and it was indeed shot on Sony.

I think we found an even simpler workaround which seems to be working - just renamed all the full quality media files as proxies eg C0012_proxy.mov and Prem Pro seems happy enough to use them in place.

Fingers crossed that doesn't all come unglued!

Great that you found a solution. Next time you try in FCPx:
First import original media, then select all and relink PROXY-media files in the menu. Then you can just edit with proxies and switch forth and back. Beware: If you use four channel audio on sony, the proxies only have two channels. This can cause additional issues. Its easier and safer just to generate new files if you have the time.
