Hi, So I've got a base model M1 Air as a 'temporary' system to be able to edit R6 footage 2yrs ago and It's been the best Mac I've owned over a decade. It's incredible. Even moving on to an R5C it edits 4K WideDR stuff perfectly but since I started shooting Netflix spec 4K 422 Clog3 and adding Luts it's starting to choke a little. Nothing Proxies don't fix but I'd like to upgrade.. I'm not not sure how much horse power I need.

I'm thinking I get a beefier desktop for home and keep the Air for on location stuff. But would a Mac Mini M2 Pro be enough to edit Netflix Canon Long Gap 4K 422 Clog3 smoothly like 'regular' footage or would I need to be looking at an M2 Max (presuming the M2 Mac Studio is announced later today.

Thanks for your input :)

all you really need is an M1 pro. plenty. maybe add more RAM but definitely 1TB SSD. M2 is more of marketing. M3 will be the next step. invest in other specs than CPU/GPU

Thanks. Thats good to know.

So I just took the project from my last shoot. 48GB.. and transcoded everything to ProRes Proxy 50% so 1080p proxy files. I'm really surprised it only added 12gb (25%) to the project size. Everything edits like butter again. This may have tamed my new Mac lust until an M3 air comes out.. But reserve the right to take that back after the M2 Studio is announced later today. ☺️

sure, proxies are the way to go since the 90s and prores proxy is damn small, h264 proxies are even smaller.
