Does anyone know if the Blackmagic Ultrastudio Recorder 3G will show up as a device in FCP to import from?  Blackmagic themselves describe it as compatible with Final Cut Pro but I've heard reports that it doesn't work.  If not are there any other SDI capture devices that do work?

I'm quite sure that BMD's comment refers to the fact that video captured with the device can be played and manipulated in FCP, but not that FCP can capture the footage from it. I believe using BMD Media Express software will allow capture thru SDI, and then that captured footage will import into FCP. As far as I know, FCP still to this day can ONLY capture footage via FIREWIRE or thru some adaptation of firewire.

I haven't got one, so can't test it.

Here's the stuff Apple says works with FCP:

EDIT:  Questions
  What are you capturing from?
  What is your intended workflow?

I have had issues with even HDMI capture from the UltraStudio Monitor 3G 3G-SDI/HDMI. That wasn't capture to FCP but simply to Zoom video conferencing. I think there are two issues:

(1) The video source must either appear within MacOS as a "UVC" device, or other software from the hardware vendor or 3rd party must be used to interface between the capture device and the final software (Zoom, FCP, etc).

(2) FCP itself is highly restrictive about what devices it will capture from. E.g, using a Magewell Gen 2 HDMI-to-USB capture device, 1080p HDMI video from various cameras shows up with Quicktime Player, Zoom, Facetime, Teams, etc. as an available device: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I16VQOY

However video from those devices does not show up in FCP. There is a driverless USB standard called UVC but apparently FCP does not support that.Magewell makes a 4k SDI-to-USB capture device, but what's the point if FCP will not recognize UVC: www.amazon.com/dp/B085TLXFQ5/

Resolve Studio 18 also does not recognize UVC, at least on Apple Silicon MacOS.

Outside of FCP and Resolve, with an appropriate capture device and software you can record the HDMI or SDI camera output to a disk file. Quicktime Player will do this. Magewell, the manufacturer of the above capture device has a free utility (registration and hardware serial number required) to capture from their devices. However it is for x86 MacOS only, Windows and Linux: www.magewell.com/downloads/usb-capture#/tools/mac-x86

It's possible the underlying issue is UVC is supported in AVFoundation but not the lower-level video device framework Core Media IO (which FCP may use for capturing).

However on Apple's developer site they say starting with Monterey 12.3 that Core Media IO is supposed to support UVC. developer.apple.com/documentation/coreme...ideo_class_extension
