How to get FCP to Convert/"optimised" media to PRORES HQ

Hi.. working on a documentary for kids and thought FCP would be a smart program for a workflow based on different laptops. In other projects we work with Premiere. This is a test and we really would like to start working on FCP instead. We Edit online and should work on PRORES 422HQ. FCP is supersmart, easy to handle and all that. BUT.. I just can't make it transform the MOV-files to anything but PRORES 422. Is there any suitable workflow for this. Of Course can use Mediaconverter. But I really would like to take the Apple way this time. cheers /Leif

Leif, why do you believe that you need to use ProRes 422 HQ media inside of FCP? What is the source media? What is the deliverable file format, video and audio codecs, frame size, frame rate, audio channel configuration, etc.?

The optimized media feature in FCP is designed to create ProRes 422 alternatives to the various types of "hard(er) for NLE applications to use efficiently" file types and codecs.

Well for the most part I shoot this docuementary in 400 MBS 4096 X 2160 25.00p All-intra. My colour grader recommended me to use Process Hq. That is basically the reason. I have so far only shoot variable frame rate in 60 fps..

Optimized media in FCP is used to assist the application in playback and will not have any impact on the actual image processing.

You can set your timeline/Project to render things in ProRes 422 HQ (or higher quality).

Converting the original footage to ProRes 422 HQ for editing might be overkill. Converting/transcoding to ProRes 422 ("optimized") prior, during, or after import might make editing smoother (H.264/H.265 are meant for smaller file sizes, whereas ProRes yields larger files but a smoother editing experience, in general).

So it is in the timeline. Great 👍 thank you so much. As I only import in FC on my laptop I have not made a Timeline yet.
My director will edit on Premiere pro. But I see FCP in the long run as my editor.
As we prefer to edit online and want to export the series to other channels we prefer HQ as it is retaining better quality
