How long it takes the timeline to draw waveforms was created by WGallagher
If I'm playing something back in FCP and I swipe along the timeline, it will not draw in the waveforms until I tap the spacebar to pause playback. Is that just the way it is? Sometimes I find there is a waveform but it isn't accurate, again until I pause playing back.
It's always bothered me but lately I've been doing videos where there is clear silence between sections and it would speed up my first edit if I didn't have to keep waiting.
Forgive me if this has been asked before; I've struggled to find the terms to describe it.

It's normal behavior, with priority given to playback quality. I think there's a way around it (haven't tried it myself) that would likely cause playback issues, depending on hardware.

The free CommandPost has a setting to force redrawing of waveforms during playback, however you may experience issues as dmetz alluded depending on your hardware...
Weird, I can't get redrawing of waveforms to work during playback. CommandPost's documentation is non-existent for its FCP settings. It may have worked previously... ???

That's such a shame, but thank you, it makes sense.

I've had issues with Command Post interfering with timeline playback fluidity being extremely lagging and at times unresponsive at all play / pause using the space bar. CP might likewise affect other playback parameters so if you're experiencing a bit of playback funkiness kill CP and see if things correct themself.
