Issues with ProRes 422 Exports

Hey all,
Wondering if anyone has had issues with long complex exports in 422.
I recently did a one-hour plus project with multiple layers and compound clips, including several keyed graphics.

At h264, the entire thing exported beautifully, with nary a hiccup.

But when I tried exporting in ProRes 422, about ten seconds in, the keyed graphic overlays started getting glitchy, jumping around, flickering in and out, etc.

I tried many things:  trashing preferences, rebooting, copying and pasting to another project, transferring the whole thing to a different drive - anything I could think of.

Also tried just outputting a minutes worth.

Same thing.

Luckily, the client was able to use the h264 output, otherwise I would have been in a world of hurt.

Anybody else encounter this?

Any solutions?

Thanks.

David

I only know enough to offer this solution:
Select the entire project storyline and go to File > Delete Generated Clip Files... OR select the Project in the Event browser and File > Delete Generated Project Files...

This should dump any pieces of render files that might be "confusing" fcpx on export.

If this doesn't work, try creating a *new* project w/ the same specs and copy/paste all the storyline clips into the new project (I wouldn't just duplicate the project.)

In both cases — export immediately.

Others might have better informed solutions... HTH

What year and model of Mac is this, what version of MacOS and what version of FCP? Are you using a 3rd-party keyer or the built-in FCP keyer effect?

It's interesting the default FCP render format is ProRes 422 and as an optimization when export to ProRes 422 it copies those render cache segments to output instead of re-encoding them. By contrast when exporting to H264 it must re-encode that output. This could imply there is some kind of corruption in the render cache.

One possible test would be disable background render in FCP preferences, delete all render cache by File>Delete Generated Library Files>Delete Render Files>All, then try to export to ProRes 422.

Within the past year there was a bug in Hawaiki Keyer (now fixed) that was specific to M1 Max and M1 Ultra, so that's one example of why we usually need the hardware platform info.

Re "glitchy", "jumping around", there was a rendering bug unique to M1 Max and M1 Ultra that was more common on ProRes 422 in 10.6.2 and 10.6.3 which was fixed in 10.6.4. It would sometimes manifest behavior with that general description. It was more common if using a temporal plugin, IOW one which analyzes multiple frames.
