How can I make a very large (400+GB) project run more smoothly?

I have a very large project that will be ongoing indefinitely as I continue to add to it. It's currently made up of about 400GB worth of media, with the library/original media being stored on an external SSD.
As my project has grown, it's become very laggy. Clips are slow to drag in the timeline and the spinning rainbow wheel frequently appears when I hit Command-Z to undo something. The rainbow wheel doesn't stay forever and the app never crashes or anything, but it does hang for 5-20 seconds each time.
I'm working on my iMac, Big Sur 11.6.8, 3.6GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9, 16GB of RAM and a Radeon Pro 575X 4GB. Using the latest version of FCP. As for the media specs, it's a mix between 1080p/720p 60fps h.264. Project is in 1080p 60fps.
