In what way are they not working for you? Is layers are still available when you open the file in the timeline. This assumes they’re rasterized, bitmapped layers without shapes. Also, they may stop to work off the layers are rearranged externally.

In what way ?
well, stacked PSD layers (not grouped) that would have gone straight into Fcp as separate layers won't anymore...
I suspect something has changed with adobe though, because old PSD still behave the right way...

That’s possible. I don’t have any new layered PSD created in recent versions of Photoshop. All my recent layered images were exported from Pixelmator as PSD files.

yep, Pixelmator seems the only way to go.
if originally created in Photoshop you need to save the .psd in Pixelmator (as .pxd) and export it from there as .psd with the "Fcp" option.

You don't actually have to save in Pixelmator file I don't think. Just open. Export. Quit.

Interesting. I have no problem with layered .psd files from PS.
The only gotcha for me is that sometimes I'll add transitions to individual layers inside the file - animating an end card for example. Once you do this, you can't just double-click to access. You need to select the file in the timeline, and choose 'Open Clip' from the Clip menu.
Otherwise fine for me. My .psds aren't particularly complicated though. I'll usually tailor the file for whatever purpose I'm using it for in FCP.
