Sony IPCM 24bit four channel Audio and Final Cut Pro x from Sony A7S III or FX3 02 Jul 2022 15:42 #121183

I just received a Sony FX3 and cant get audio to work in FCPX. Does anybody have a solution? There should be a possibility to convert with FFMPEG but I dont know if its possible to batch process those files. Or is there a newer version of FCPX that can read those files. I am still working on MACOS Catalina so I dont have the latest version.

Could you upload a short, sample file from something you tried to import to Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.? Five to ten seconds should work. Then, provide a download link here? Thanks.

Hmm, the wetransfer link just takes me to the homepage of their website. I'll check again in a few minutes, as it may be that the file hasn't completed uploading yet...
Update: The link is good, now... |

Okay, I imported the file via the Import window and it seems to be fine on my system (macOS 12.4, FCP 10.6.3). See attached screenshot. I can see all four channels of audio and things playback fine...
What version FCP are you running on Catalina? FCP 10.5.4 seems to be the latest version supported in Catalina... Please go into a bit more detail about how the media isn't working in FCP. No audio? Can you see the audio channels in the inspector (as in my screenshot)? Couldn't import, at all? Etc. Thanks. |

Thanks! I am using 10.5.4, strangely another user told me it works on his system with this version.. discussions.apple.com/thread/254014040?a...ssion-en-us-11192020
Could this be dependent on the Version of MacOS? |

Okay, if you use the import window, select the file and then play a preview there you will probably hear the sound. If so, then there is a preference setting that needs to be changed.
In the FCP preferences, go to the Import tab and turn of the "remove silent channels" option. You can probably leave this off permanently. It's a flaky option, as causes channels with enough silence in them to not import. This should fix your issue. You should probably restart FCP after making the change, delete the clips and re-import them... Cheers. |

If you play the file in QuickTime Player, do you hear audio?
While we're testing this, you should use the same file you posted, in case there's an issue with the original file. I hear audio in QT Player myself. |

Still the same.. I am afraid renaming is not enough, the file should be rewrapped with ffmpeg, but I dont know if its possible to batch-rewrap a large amount of files.
Is there no way to update Quicktime? I have Version 10.5 |

Hard to tell if it's an issue with your setup (macOS or FCP being damaged/corrupted), or not...
Anyway, as a workaround, and so you don't have to mess with batch re-wrapping of files using ffmpeg itself, you could try Shutter Encoder: www.shutterencoder.com/en/ It's free and it has a re-wrap (pass through audio and video) function that should help (and you can process a batch of files, if you like)... |

It's not an application or OS problem. It works even in FCP 10.4.10. It's most likely a software conflict of some sort that's effecting the video components of the system with some Apple applications. You can probably import the files by rewrapping, but something else is likely to pop up unless you can find the source of the problem.
