So I got my base Mac studio and mostly I’m delighted with the performance, except for a couple of things.. grading 4k pro res hq footage I get beach balls for a second or so after making changes, slows things down… also when I do reveal in finder with a large project the beach ball will spin for about ten seconds before it finds it.. is this normal? Thought I’d be snappier..

I get the same so I think it's normal... I'm used to it now...

The delay is not normal at all. There is likely a software conflict or some other software that’s interfering or software that has damaged the system resources.

That's interesting, thanks for letting me know... it's a clean install on a new machine... I'm reading the footage from a Sabrent 2TB SSD, some is proxy and some is master... I'll check everything!!

Simple fix :). I had another TB3 drive plugged in and for some reason it was causing the delays... Happy now :)

As Tom said, a beach ball for 10 sec when doing Reveal in Finder is not normal. That operation is a simple lookup --- it does not involve significant computation or I/O. On Mac Studio and maybe on M1 Max MacBook Pros there have been some reports of increased sensitivity to certain SSDs. Sometimes that might manifest as anomalous I/O hangs or slow I/O performance.

Make sure you are using the OEM short, thick USB-C cable and it's plugged directly into the Mac Studio, not a hub. Run Blackmagic Disk Speed Test on that drive and report the numbers. Run Disk Utility First Aid on that drive. Then rebuild the Spotlight indexes on that drive using this method: support.apple.com/en-us/HT201716

Edit/add: I just saw your last post, do the above on the problematic TB3 drive. If by chance that is a mechanical drive sometimes they can spin down due to the power saving feature and then incur a delay when the drive is "enumerated", meaning you are not doing I/O to it but the system checks what drives are connected.

I have had some audio plugins (CrumplePop) that were not optimized for Apple Silicon when I got my M1 Ultra Mac Studio. They were updated to M1 in the last month and they work much better. I don't use any third party plugins for color grading so I can't say definitively that this is an analogous situation.
