FCP / Avid Question

FCP / Avid Question was created by easyandy
in fcp is there a way of 'lifting' , avid style, sections of video only from interview sync on the timeline without cutting the audio too? i can only seem to be able to do this by detaching the audio first. i want to prepare the sync precisely for b-roll by 'lifting" the precise sections of picture only. and i don't want to lose sync with the audio in case i make changes later on. tried the range tool and the blade tool. both cut the video and the audio. is there another method? thanks

You can't but you also don't need to. You might get caught in the 'track' thinking. Took me a long time to overcome.
Because it doesn't matter where the audio is just lift the videoclip with the audio out of the primary. The Audio keeps following all the same rules it does when it is in the primary. Only reason you would detach audio is if you only want the audio or if you want to use the audio out of sync with the video part of the clip.

thanks. i'll check it out.
i think the best route for me is to use markers to mark in and out points on the t/line. i want to a prep alot of sync on the t/line and want to set in and outs on the timeline for where i will place b-roll. lifting out the sections makes it easy to see visually what's going on, but that's not an option with fcp if you want to lift a middle section from some sync. i'll check out the post. thanks again.

Markers are a good way.
Another thing you could do is use an adjustment layer and connect it to the primary where your b-roll clip would be. Because it’s an empty title you see the primary underneath but on the timeline have a strong visual cue. To replace these clips with actual B-roll you can use the ‘replace clip’ command (option-r). Just a thought
