Sorry if this is a daft question but im not finding the answer elsewhere. So I made a backup of a project on an external hard drive. I have then made some minimal changes to that project on my local drive. I therefore want to ensure these changes are saved in my external location without having to copy the whole project over again. It is 800gb so would take a few hours

One option would be the app Backups for Final Cut Pro in the App Store. It only backs up ... Final Cut. You can choose the location and the frequency (automatic or manual).

I recommend getting a backup system in place right away. I have used Carbon Copy Cloner for years. Your first backup will include all files but after that backups will be incremental and only changed files will be written to the backup. While the FCP Backup app mentioned might be good software you are much safer cloning your entire drive and maintaining that than backing up just select files.

I also feel that many users try to go cheap on storage which as far as I’m concerned is more hassle than it’s worth. All of my media is on 2 external RAID’s totaling about 20 TB of space. I have plenty of available (unused) space to spare so I never even have to think about it. My backup drive is a simple 12 TB USB drive and has about 10 TB of backups on it. Good luck

The above is good advice on backup if up your files.

Did you add media to the original or just make changes to the timeline. If you just made the changes to the timeline, not adding media, then you should be able to just copy the library file over to your back up drive. Someone can correct me if I am wrong.

You would actually copy the project (which is the timeline).  The library, in the OP's case, would include the 800GB of media in events that he wants to avoid re-copying.  But, you make a good point - if no additional media was added, the project files are very small and easy to copy and contain all the edits.  The one exception could be if any media was opened into its own timeline and changes were made to that, but generally that does not happen regularly.

Creating history....one edit at a time !
