FCP slows down when I connect my external drive EVEN when I'm using proxies

Hi all,
I'm working on a project whereby all my proxy media/project files are on my internal drive. From time to time I connect the external hard drive to export at full res or proxy some new files etc.
When I connect the drive I notice that immediately the spinning wheel of death returns and seems to slow all of my commands even when I'm still using "proxy only"..
Any ideas as to why please?
Thanks
marco

Please give details of your system, the external drive, and how it’s connected and formatted.

Thanks!

The drive should be APFS or HFS+ formatted for use with FCP.

Nope, you can't edit on ExFAT formatted drive, major issues, as Tom said, reformat to one of the two Apple formats.
