Use FCPX XML to create EDL to open newer project in older version of FCPX?

There may be a developer that has already created something for this but here's my hypothetical question: Someone has been sent an edit to work on, created using a clients new Mac using the most recent version of FCPX, but the editors own machine is an older Mac that cannot quite update to the clients version and so the FCP Library is 'too new' and therefore incompatible with the older version of FCP.  Depending on what version of FCP and wether or not an FCPXML update has been released in the intervening time, can we generate an FCPX EDL and create a reasonably intact version of the project, bringing the edit back ( Wide eyed Doc Smith pose...) from the future?

Never tried but would assume that if the XML format version is the same then it should work.
In other words: If on export from the newer version FCP the oldest version XML format available is not supported by the older FCP version, probably not. But try it anyway. Might not have all effects or special things in the transfer but the basic edits could work..

Hmmm... FCP does not work with an actual EDL - either in or out. Intelligent Assistance makes the main FCPXML <-> XML tools that everyone uses.

XMIL makes the only FCPXML -> EDL tool, AFAIK.

I think you can typically go one older version of FCPXML, but not too much farther. You might also attempt round-tripping the FCPXMLs through Resolve as another option.

Yes, that's correct, the older version of FCP would have to be more than a couple of versions back, because FCP's XML export allows you to export the current or the previous version of XML. But yes, Oliver got it right with Intelligent Assistance.

Thank you everyone. This subject came up on another forum and I wanted to follow up on it as my old MBP ( Late 2013 ) won't update to Monterey, but my Office Machine will. This of course starts to sound a few alarm bells! I guess I'll be holding back on any future FCP updates that require Monterey until I get that new M1 MBP.
I don't often need to switch between machines on a project, but just in case! There's been a lot of suddenly having to work from home in the last couple of years!
I have to say that nine years has been a pretty good run for a laptop though. I'm pretty happy with that.
A reverse compatibility app for FCP projects would be a great idea though ( Hint to any developers out there looking for a new project! )
