i am trying to get downloaded 4K MKV file into FCPX. Is it possible to do that directly or is it easier / better to convert to MOV or so first. And if so in what app can that be done? Is this possible in Quicktime? Perian is refused bij my Mac

.mkv doesn’t work in FCP, nor in QT. I would suggest Handbrake to convert it.

I hate MKV files. They take forever to convert if you can find something that works or plays well with them. Compressor hates them. QT won't play or convert them. EditReady hates them, too. If you don't care about quality Handbrake will convert them. VLC may convert them but I've always had problems with anything VLC puts its hands on so I didn't bother testing it.

Depending on your output settings Toast will convert it to MOV but this 1 minute test on To Catch A Thief took 8 minutes and it's only 640x480 output. That 100 minute video would take around 13.5 hours to convert the file.

I'd like to hear of another approach from anyone for working with MKV files but there's not much need for me to contend with the devils as there are only five such files across the 13 hard drives on the network here. (Spec reports via VLC, Video Spec, and Toast. )

EDIT...  Just caught the 4K spec of the video I overlooked on first read. That's rich. My experience with MKV files has me thinking it'd be quicker to reshoot the whole shebang than it would be waiting for the file conversion. (Customer wanted Wages of Fear mkv file converted to play on a disc.
DVD format, not even Bluray. $20 is about right for something not needing my input or attention. Set things up to continue encoding overnight. Check in the morning thinking it'd be finished... only 23% after 19 hours! FORGET THAT NONSENSE. I made more per hour cutting grass in grade school.)
