Hello

Q1: I have S-Log footage that I imported into my FCPX library, which I set at the start to Wide Gamut.
However when I click on the inspector for the footage, it says it is  Rec. 709.
Why is this and how can I change it?  (and does it matter/impact the look much?)

Q2: I now want to apply the ARRI Log C - its a bit too strong, but I see no way of adjusting the LUT levels in the inspector? Is there a way to do that, or do I have to go into color correction?
The only way of adjusting a LUT I can find - is using custom luts in Effects, but I want this Arri lut.

Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks!

Log footage is not necessarily HDR.

LUTs are not adjustable. They’re fixed tables of instructions to modify the image. You’d have to color correct. Normally you use the manufacturer specified LUT for the media and color correct from there. Some editors prefer to color correct directly from the log footage without using a LUT.

I am fairly novice, by my camera person told me to set it to wide gamut, so I'm guessing it is HDR.
I saw on a post elsewhere from around 2019, that FCXP had an unresolved bug in relation to this.. I wonder is that the problem still in 2021?

Colour correction it must be..

Thanks for your feedback

...S-Log footage that I imported into my FCPX library...

S-Log is generally Sony. Is is really S-Log or is it S-Log2 or S-Log3? What camera model?

It would be easier if you could post to a file sharing service a very short clip, even 1 second is enough. That means an out-of-camera, untouched clip, not one which has been imported or transcoded. We can examine the metadata and find details to help evaluate this and make recommendations.

For Q1 I will take a guess (and hope someone corrects me if I am wrong). On my Sony camera, the picture profiles (s-log or otherwise) allow me to select the "color mode." Setting to 709 will presumably record the footage in the 709 space. Changing to, for example, BT2020 should do what you want. Once recorded, it's not possible to "upscale" the color space.

As far as dialing in the LUT intensity, you can't do that from the setting panel. As you have found out, that built-in LUT isn't available in the Custom LUT effect. It also seems Apple hides the built-in LUTs so they aren't accessible outside of the settings panel.

That said, Cinecolor does have a free ARRI Log C LUT. I don't know if it's the same as the one in FCP, but worth taking a look. The LUT is a conversion LUT to 709, so I'm not sure if it is appropriate for a project destined for wide-gamut output.

Q1 - Your footage is 709 with an S-log gamma profile. Your library settings should be Rec 709, not wide gamut. Ignore your camera operator.
Q2 - Camera LUTS are NOT interchangeable. They are specific to the color science of each camera manufacturer. If you add a LUT via the inspector, look for one of the S-Log options. However, S-log is so slight, you can correct it manually with the standard FCP color correction tools. Personally I always grade S-log manually, because none of the Sony LUTs ever look right to me. ARRI and Panasonic OTOH are usually right on.
