Sequence Keywords. Working from a paper cut. was created by Goldfalme
Hello!
Thanks in advance for any advice. This is my first post.
I am working from a script. I have been unable to find any examples of workflows, or recommended practices for working from a transcription or script. It's for an historical documentary.
So far:
1: I transcribed all my interviews and created a timecoded paper cut/script and after a few revisions, I settled on a version.
2: I'm now locating all the selected content from that script in the footage. I'm using favourites and keywords. The keywording will be helpful further down the line, as I'll probably reshape the script.
However - I can find no way of sequencing the content as I go, in the order I have organised it in the script.
It looks like I'll have to do all my keywording first - then go back through all the content again, find it in the script and order it in the timeline.
But after doing so much work on various drafts of the script, I'm a bit frustrated that there doesn't seem to be a way I can just number or order each content selection as I go?
It would be convenient if I could do something like add a number to each keyword or favourite, then order it in numerical order?
How do other people approach using a script or paper cut to edit from?
Any tips? Many Thanks!

Look into things like LumberJack, or SimonSays, or Scribomatic, as they all do this very thing inside FCP.

Hi thanks for your reply. I have downloaded the Simonsays extension for FCPX and I'll give it a go..
I guess that means I may have to start the project from scratch?
Meanwhile I imagine there are more traditional methods for working from a paper edit/script?
I understand this software is pretty new - so if anyone can tell me the standard approach that people have been using would be great.

Goldfalme - I presume you are trying to use the paper cut from your transcript to keyword/favorite the selected lines from the transcript. Then use that info to automatically assemble a stringout in the order of the paper cut. Is that correct? If so, no, there is no automatic method inside FCP. You can assemble all of the favorites at one time to one timeline, but this will follow the source order. If you rearranged the clips on paper, then it won't automatically match this order. There are several options like Lumberjack, but that would mean starting over and using their workflow. You simply need to start cutting these selects to a timeline in the desired order to create a starting point.

There is a method to make finding the Favorites a bit easier.
1) Use the Notes column to add a numbering scheme based on the order of your paper cut. IOW, number the Favorites in the paper cut order. 101, 102, 103, etc. When you favorite the range for the first clip, add 101 to the Notes column for that Favorite. Once you are done, you'll have all the Favorite ranges within all media clips numbered according to the order that they appear in your revised paper cut.
2) To create the first assembly, use the search function CMD-F to find each numbered segment in the browser (one at a time). Set the pop-up search window to select text in the Notes column. Type in 101 and the first segment appears. Cut it to the timeline (append). Type in 102 and the next segment appears. Cut it to the timeline. Rinse and repeat.
HTH.

Using an external csv app to fcpxml could simplify your work...
I use "easy csv editor" or Number with "SHOT NOTES X" from the app store to manipulate the metadata in spreadsheet versions then reimport the new metadata version in a new auto generated searchable EVENT . This workflow is easy and might work for you.
hope this helps
