FCP crashing on a new M1 Max MBP 16" was created by marconoe
Hi all,
I've spent the last few days working on a fresh MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021) M1 Max 32GB and to my complete frustration the issues I was having on my old laptop and the reason I thought I was upgrading for are still present... mainly FCP keeps crashing.
I don't really know where to start or who to speak to in order to try solve this. It's across multiple projects so I wonder if it's just an issue with FCP? I would love some advice on where to start and who to speak to at Apple for support perhaps?
A major step I already took fyi: completely wiped and clean installed on my last MBP. That new "clean" profile is the one I migrated onto my new MBP.
any help welcomed thank you!
Marco

Hi, I am experiencing the same thing with my brand new 16” M1 max 24 core 32gb. I imported about 8 minutes of 5.1K footage which was fairly quick to process, but as soon as I started adding noise reduction or exposure adjustments to even a 20 second clip the rendering slowed to an absolute crawl and I got a “your computer had run out of application memory” message. This is extremely frustrating as fcp is an apple developed product which should work flawlessly with apple’s flagship laptop. Currently on hold with apple support to see if they have any suggestions, if they do I’ll let you know.

You just need to Google "M1 running out of application memory" to know that you are not alone. And this problem is not specifically related to FCP, it's more of a MacOS issue. But as FCP like any NLE is a very memory-demanding application, especially when you also use RAM-hungry plugins, you are bound to see this problem occur more often when using FCP. It was also a common problem at some point with Intel Macs so, it's not strictly related to M1.
This may help you better understand what's going on, and how to prevent this. Apple is aware of the issues and we may expect fixes as soon as they are ready:

I've had the memory problem in the past, but currently having lockups that don't resemble those at all.
M1 Mac mini, 16GB RAM, has handled large projects in the past before Monterey OS.
Last two days, have been getting freezes exclusively in FCP that require a force quit.
Strangely, FCP isn't even showing as "Not responding" in the force quit dialog box.
I know this doesn't help OP situation, but sometimes it helps to know that you're not alone.
Good luck, wish me the same...
