Hey everyone,

What sorts of issues am I going to run into if I create multicam clips that have different frame rates? Specifically 29.97 and 25fps?

Please don't tell me I should always shoot consistent frame rates :) this is just the footage I have to work with as the editor.

Cheers

Marco

The issue you will run into is that angles in your multicam which have a frame rate different from the project timeline you are cutting them into will playback conformed to fit the timeline timebase - so that could mean frames will be duplicated or eliminated as necessary to conform to the project's timebase. Depending on the footage this could be noticeable and undesirable, or it could be less noticeable and acceptable.

THanks dgwvideo. Does that also apply to the fps I set my multicam to?

For example lets say I have:
A cam = 29.97 fps
B cam = 25 fps
Multicam framerate = 29.97 fps
Before doing anything else does that mean my B cam will have duplicate frames?
And then let's take it a step further and say I drop that multicam into a 25 fps timeline... will I have a double up effect on the B cam?
Thanks for entertaining the mind bender!

What do you need to deliver? 25 or 29.97 or something else?

I’d convert the 29.97 to some form of ProRes in 25.

Differing frame rates in a multicam can really slow a Mac down, too. I'm with Tom on this one.

Ok thanks. So just export the individual clips using Apple ProRes 422 along with the corresponding frame size? Will I preserve all audio/video info for tweaking down the line..? I need to do some research to understand proxies/prores/422/4444 - if you have any go to articles for the overview that would be much appreciated!

thanks

Marco

You only need regular ProRes, none of the other fancy flavors, and match frame RATE (some say size doesn't matter, but that's a totally unrelated issue).

Haha thanks Ben! Yes I matched frame rate... I exported my 29.97 to a 25 .. i opted for ProRes HQ because I didn't know better and hadn't seen your message!
