Howdy! I've been using a 2014 Macbook pro since I bought it new, and it's time for a newer, faster machine. I do a fair amount of editing in Final Cut and a lot of Zoom calls for work. I run 2 external monitors and hard drives to it via a dock system. The 2014 unit came with a 1TB int.HD.
My son gave me his 2019 13" Macbook pro, but it only has t-bolt ports, a 256gb internal drive. The cost to change to 1TB SSD is $600 parts alone, plus I'll need a strong dock station ($300 for the Cal Digit TS3 plus) to accommodate my older USB peripherals, as well as USB-c to HDMI dongles ($11 each). I'm looking at at least $1K to modify this 2019 model to become the brain and hub for my workstation.
Even if I get a brand new 2021 mbpro, which will likely run me in the high $2K to low $3k (gotta include apple care for $350), I'll need to purchase a dock (at least $200). Is it worth goosing up the 2019 model or should I buy a new model? Thanks!
The reports of the substantial speed increase and efficiency would have me putting my money on the new unit (assuming you're buying into the M1 and not the Intel chip) and not throwing it at the old one. I'd hold off on AC until the last moment seeing as you're really buying 2 years coverage since the thing already comes with a one year coverage.
I would definitely go for the new M series MacBook Pro. Beyond just the general speed increases, reduced heat and much longer battery life, the newer M series chips also have neural cores which I genuinely think are going to play a bigger and bigger role as time moves forward for many features, the least of which is the new object tracking feature they recently added to FCP.
