ReBranding video file specs question...

Hello,

I currently submit content to a network with these specs:

MXF (OP-1A) XDCAM HD 422
1280X720
50.0 MBPS
8 channels of audio (even if only two are active, all 8 need to be present)
59.94 Drop Fram TC with a 1 hour start

After they have aired, they become reruns we air again. However, I have to update commercials, intro (maybe) and get the timing down. Nothing else.

Is it as easy as importing that MXF file, make my edits and then re-rendering to the same specs? Or do I lose something by doing this process? Is there anything to anticipate fixing or being faced with?

Thank you for any feedback.

-Brandon

While your method could work, I believe the best approach would be to keep your finished FCP project intact and then call that up when you need to make changes. You can create a snapshot of that project and give it a different name, or you can completely duplicate that project. Either way, making your edits in the project timeline and then exporting a new master deliverable file would make more sense than importing the existing deliverable (since that will not be as easy to edit with baked in elements such as titles, transitions, color grades, etc.). Alternatively, you could call up the original project timeline and edit that, but by snapshotting or duplicating that project (and using that version to edit from) you will always have the original edits should you ever need them.

Creating history....one edit at a time !

For Clarification... this original file did not originate in FCPX. It's a Premiere Pro file from the videographer before me. Knowing that, the question remains the same. I'm taking the original MXF file that had those output settings. I'm importing into FCPX because that's what I'm fluent in. Thanks.

You don't have much choice if that's all you get, in which case edit the MXF you are given. I've had to do this pretty regularly for broadcast TV and never had any seriously noticeable degradation in image quality. FCP maintains and export stuff pretty well.
