Hi All

would like to purchase a 16 MBP M1 Max. My work will be UHD HEVC 3 camera Multicam at 23.97 or 29.98 FPS. Also, a year down the road 8K may be a possibility. Work is generally simple with color corrections and animations that have been encoded UHD ProRes 4444 with alpha.

For this style of work, do I require 32 or 64 GB. I know that it hard to tell at this point as there are very few machines in the wild. But would very much appreciate a best guess.

Currently, I own a 2016 MBP15 with 16 GP and the 2.9 GHx i7 processor. Optimization to ProRes 422 is very slow as is encoding. I tried an M1 Mini with 8 GB RAM and that was much better. I rarely had to optimize the HEVC files.

I'm in the same boat - I think watching stuff like Max Tech on YouTube will probably answer this in the next week or so

Adding US$400/€460 to the 16“ M1Max 1TB price - a no-brainer imho. Go for the 64GBs: this MBP will be in use for some years and a later upgrade is a no-go, so…

+1 64GB

Hi NS:

Thank you for writing. I did see the MaxTech review. He has ordered 8 different versions of the M1 and will post comparative benchmarks when he receives the units.

I posed this same question on the Blackmagic Forum. You can read it here:

forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=149577

In any case, I convinced myself that 16" MBP M1 Max 64 GB was the to go. Order should arrive mid-December.

I chose the 16" for the high power mode. After placing my order, came across another review regrading the max power mode. Made very little difference in encoding time. I wish could recall where I saw this for others to see. So maybe 14" might have been a better choice.

Thank you again for writing.

Yes - I think I'll go for M1 MAX but undecided whether I'll go for 64GB ram as its a pricey enough beast as it is... Will wait for the tests before pulling the trigger (I'd actually prefer the M1MAX iMac but can't wait that long for a new machine).
