Final Cut Pro requirements 21 Oct 2021 02:07 #116834

I'm a bit confused by the latest reports. Does the new FCPX update (10.6) require an M1 chip as well as Big Sur...meaning anyone without an M1 computer can't use it??

I just updated to it on my iMac Pro, so no, you do not need an M1 chip to use it. If you don't see the update in the Update section of the App Store, go to the FCP page itself, it should let you update there. That's how I always have to update the pro apps, from their own pages.

Thanks, Ben, that's really good news. I didn't see the update in the App Store, so that's why I was wondering. Does one just go to Apple and download the "Trial" version? Not sure what you mean by the FCP page?? Cheers!

Here's from Apple's FCP page:

3.8GB of available disk space
Some features require Internet access; fees may apply.
Blu-ray recorder required for burning Blu-ray discs.

Thanks again, Ben. Yes I saw all the requirements, and no problem with them. Was mainly just wondering if downloading the trial version is what you meant. I assume if one has purchased the program as I have, then after installation of the trial version, it will become the 'owned' version??

No, not talking about the Trial version. Go to the App Store, find Final Cut Pro there, search for "Final Cut Pro". If has not been purchased, a Buy button is there. If it has been an Install button is there. If it's installed that button is "Open". Well, I and others have never seen pro app updates listed in the Update section, we have to go to the FCP page in the App Store, and that button then is labeled "Update". It's a bug in the App Store that's never been fixed.

Okay, not to belabor the point, but the first thing I did yesterday was to go to the App Store. But as reported elsewhere by others as well, the only version shown there was the one I have with an “Open” button beside it. There was no Buy or Update button…. that’s why I posted here. 😄 Wondering now if the App Store for Canada is different than what you might be seeing in your country? Anyway, currently cannot get the latest update, and I am on Big Sur running on a Mac Pro.

EDIT: Okay, it's finally on the App Store here this morning. Yay. The Logic Pro update wasn't available yesterday either, so am hoping it's there now as well. Anyway, currently downloading the update so 'problem solved'. Thanks again for your help, Ben!

Yeah, updates don't show up for everyone at the same time. That's on Apple...

FCP, Motion, and Logic Pro all updated and 'good to go'. I guess more patience was required here! 😀👍

Yeah, I and others have not see pro apps show up on that page in years. Glad it works for you.

You may have an issue with your user account that prevents this from working. This has been the only way we have ever received pro app updates on our iMac (High Sierra), Mac Pro Tower (Mojave), MacBook Pro (Catalina) and our iMac Pro (Big Sur). Forcing the App store to "reload page" thru the top menu allows to get these updates before the normal Apple scheduled delivery.

Totally agree! They don’t appear like that here either…..just the usual ‘consumer’ apps show up.

In App Store preferences, we have checked "Automatically download apps purchased on other Mac computers". Maybe that is the reason why.

"Automatically download apps purchased on other Mac computers"
That only applies to installing a new app, not updates.

OR Apple could just fix it and make it work correctly?

Hm,
I never had a problem. Pro updates always showed up along with others. Also FCP which was bought with another account shows up together with Motion etc
