Black Time line after Adding Still with effects

So I hope someone can clear tis up for me. I have been using FCP X for quite some time and one issue I keep having is when I add a still to the time line above a disabled clip (the clips on either side are   not disabled) the clip to the left of the overlay goes black. The only way to fix that has been to lift that part of the clip out of the story line. While this work around has been working, I can't imagine that it's the tight way to be doing this .
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
