How big is your system drive? How much free space on the drive?

Please post an EtreCheck report etrecheck.com giving the application full disk access in System Preferences. When it finishes the scan, click Share Report and choose "Copy Report.” Paste the file or a link to the file here.

You only have 16GB of RAM on the machine? I'm surprised FCP even opens. How is it able to use 68GB of RAM? which is 4X the size of the RAM you have? I assume some kind of virtual memory. ANYWAY...

Final Cut Pro is a huge memory hog. I just checked Activity Monitor and it said that FCP was using about 2GB of RAM. My physical memory is 64GB and the line beneath that is Memory Used by all apps combined. It was at 48GB. I quit Final Cut Pro and Memory Used drops to 18GB. Final Cut Pro takes up a ton of memory somehow besides what it reports. It's good to quit and reopen it from time to time.

So just to be aware, this is an M1 Mac mini and  NOT an Intel mini

Unless I'm missing something, the maximum memory is  16GB as opposed to whatever on an intel mini

The M1 does not need tons of RAM because it uses the insanely fast Flash drive on the new Macs to swap memory.

Just restarting the Mac may help as this clears all unused swapped memory. Still, FCP taking 69GB of memory is very high. As Tom said, a full Etrecheck report could be useful to see what causes this.

Nope ! FcpX will actually open with 4 GB ! 8 recommended ! on MacTel
this app is very modest when it comes to RAM - That's optimisation 1
( Nevertheless I wouldn't go without at least 16GB : Like: 8 System / 8FcpX )

Now ... it is also true that with big project it will gobble as much as it finds That's optimisation 2

Of course M1 are totally different beasts. We soon should know how much RAM for the "Pro line" of M? Macs

on the present " allegedly  no Pro Video App" line  of M1 you want the extra 8GB of RAM for heavy exporting (more than 4 times faster) in FcpX

For the original post I suspect a problem with a exotic plug in ...
or.. Wouldn't you have the Chrome browser running at the same time by chance ?
