Blending? was created by bonepicker

I am shooting a documentary where I want to have "historic" figures in a scene and then have them fade out, the scene remain static and modern figures appear. I think this can be done with blending? Am I correct? Any ideas? Thanks.

Stack them with the first figure on top, use a cross face transition to reveal the one below.

Put the historic clip into the timeline, then the modern one, put a cross-fade between.
