I am working a long project and trying to keep track of where I am in the timeline is getting difficult. Is there a way to  identify groups of clips that are logical to a thought or discussion topic or say a year by color coding or somehow separating them?

For example I have images, clips, text or a copy of an email related by year. Making the TL smaller makes it difficult to know where I am when I drag something for another part of the timeline and making it larger and I also perspective. So I am putting items in the wrong place and it is making editing difficult.

Any suggestions how you would organize this effort would be appreciated.

Either use the timeline index to search for clips you know the name of or use markers, specially chapter markers, to organise your timeline. Again you can use the timeline index to only show those chapter markers to quickly jump to the one you want.
If you're not familiar with the above search the manual to get a better understanding.
Hope that helps to get you started.

Thanks Carsten
Your suggestion is not quite what I was looking for but it triggered a thought. I inserted a color generator in the space before Title clip Year 2016 and another color generator before the subsequent years and or thoughts. I can easily change colors and duration or add a title to suit the need.

The slide after the color generator is the year or thought and that gives me the visual separation I needed and could even be part of the presentation video.

Thanks

Another approach is to work in smaller sections so it's more manageable. Then compound each of those sections and string together into the full timeline at the end. For example, feature film editors frequently work in separate timelines for each scene, then combine scenes into reels, and finally the reels into the full movie.

Since FCP doesn't allow the coloring of clips to differentiate one group of clips from another like Resolve does I'll either
1) Select the group and make a secondary storyline (option+command+up arrow). Now they're all together & identified as a group or
2) Create an adjustment layer extending over the group therefore clearly identifying them or
3) Create a compound clip (option G) of them.

Actually you can color-code clips by assigning roles. You can add more video/audio roles as needed. The one caveat is that audio role colors override video role colors. So if you want the video role colors to be shown in the timeline, you have to detach the clip audio.
