Audio randomly missing during edits?

Audio randomly missing during edits? was created by Gr8dane
I edit my videos in Final Cut For (currently, version 10.5.4) on a Mac Mini M1 with 16GB of RAM. My videos tend to be fairly heavy, and often have multicam clips in them.
When I'm editing, the audio will randomly (but frequently) not play during a clip. If I go back and play the clip again, the audio may play. Playing a different clip, and then going back to the "problem" clip also seems to work sometimes.
Is anyone else experiencing this? It's not an infrequent occurrence, but often the norm rather than the exception.
I do tend to have audio plugins applied on clips inside of the mutlicam clips - could this be the issue? If so, how would you get around that? I apply them inside the multicam (rather than on the timeline) to have consistent audio for all of the clips from the same multicam "source".
I have turned off background rendering to see if that was the issue, but that doesn't seem to have made any difference.
Input and suggestions are most welcome as its getting increasing frustrating to have to replay the same clip over and over again to hear the audio while editing.
Thanks and have a great day,
\ Henrik
