I regularly ingest long clips of archive footage. In FCP 7 I would select a long clip in the viewer and then throw my selections somewhere on the timeline.

H ow can I handle this in FCP X?

You can drag select multiple selections in the filmstrip. You can also use Cmd-I and Cmd-O, and Shift-Cmd-I and Shift-Cmd-O for subsequent selections. I'd recommend IzzyVideo on YouTube for getting started with the application.
