FCP 10.5.3 getting slow

16" 2019 MCB Pro running OS 10.15.7, 2.3 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9, 16 GB 2667 MHz DDR4.
Simple keystrokes and editing operations hanging up and lagging 1/2 second to 5 seconds, when before for many months was blazing fast. Anyone point me to an article/comprehensive procedure for restoring operational speed? (not by upgrading memory or processor however). Thanks!

First thing you should try when your system becomes unexpectedly slow: create a new Admin User and check if the problems go away when using this new user account.

I'm noticing since the last FCP update on my 2013 rMBP FCPX slows down over time especially with exports. The more I export the slower the exports get. If I quit and relaunch it's fine.

My exports are still lightning fast. What has slowed down are simple editing key strokes. For example, when I select a clip, it takes a second or 2 to select and highlight it. Or switching between slip trimming and detaching audio...or drag "replacing from start" a clip -- that operation has gotten really slow, it can take 3-4 seconds for the dialog to appear, when it used to be almost instantaneous. Even just clicking around the timeline lags a second.

Man, that's hard to read without the formatting. First, do what Ronny suggestion. Always a good first test. You have a lot of useless antivirus software running that's crashing as well. I would do a complete uninstall of Intego related software and its launch daemons. That would be a start. If it's still doing this, and you can, I would test by installing Catalina on an external SSD with a fast connection and running just FCP to see how it performs. Oh, and no third party plugins like Red Giant.

Always good to do, but I don't think it would matter for the problems you're seeing. Always reset your preferences if the application crashes or is force quit.

Deleting renders is not “old school”, it’s something everyone needs to do frequently, especially if you have been using background rendering.

Tom had given you excellent advice, as always. So why don’t you start with following that advice instead so we can help you find the real cause of this problem?

I use several FCP plugins, but any plugins on x86 built using the FxPlug 3 framework (which is most of the non-template type) run *within* the process address space of FCP. That means any bug on any thread of any plugin can crash or destabilize FCP. Those problems may only manifest under narrow conditions, so they could appear "out of nowhere" after a long period of reliability.

Starting with the FxPlug 4 framework (which is mandatory for Apple Silicon) those plugins are moved to a separate address space which should make the plugin ecosystem more reliable.

Unfortunately there is no FCP "safe boot" mode which disables all plugins. The first and easiest step is update all plugins to the latest version. For FxFactory that is easy but other plugin vendors each have their own system.

If that doesn't work you should consider removing all FCP plugins, running tests without them, then if no problems reinstall them one by one. There is unfortunately no uniform method of removing plugins. Some vendors have uninstall tools, others have unofficial tools you get from their web site, others expect you to delete certain files from certain folders. As part of that you might remove the FxFactory app itself. You can always re-install it later.

You also have a bunch of MacOS kernel extensions, which can destabilize the entire operating system, or only certain apps. I can't tell which 3rd-party kexts are actually loaded but on Catalina and earlier you can run this command from terminal to check:

kextstat | grep -v com.apple

On Big Sur and later, the command is:

kmutil inspect | grep -v com.apple

It seems unclear if the delay/slowdown is just within FCP or if it ever happens outside of FCP, such as in Finder. You might comment on that.

If you have any external USB hubs, A/V breakout boxes (e.g, Blackmagic or AJA), wireless headphones, or multiple monitors, I suggest you temporarily discontinue using those for purposes of troubleshooting.

External USB 3 drives and *especially* SSDs should use only the original OEM cable. For SSDs that cable is typically short and thick and is designed for high data rates. Using a non-OEM cable (or a USB hub) on that drive type may cause periodic, intermittent response problems and slow performance.

I uninstalled/reinstalled Intego and it appears to be much faster now.
