How Best to Share FCP Footage ProRes 422? was created by jakeleefcp
Hi friends - Not sure if this question is relevant here but I'm looking to hire an editor who might be sitting remotely, and was wondering what might be the best way to share my files.
CONTEXT
If it helps I plan on using frame.io if anyone has any experience with them I'd love to hear your input as well!
Thanks so much!
CONTEXT
- I use the Atomos Ninja V and record in Apple Prores 422 (4K)
- One hour of footage for me is around ~250GB, and I plan on going through a first rough cut (cutting it down to 10 minutes) before sending it to my editor
If it helps I plan on using frame.io if anyone has any experience with them I'd love to hear your input as well!
Thanks so much!

I've been using Frame.io daily for years now, love it, couldn't live without it.
You want to send original footage from the camera to your editor.
Is this a solid 1 hour non-stop clip? Then you cut it down to a single 10 minute clip?

Oh awesome to hear that frame.io is working great for you!
So basically I want to do the first run edit by myself. I.e. cut from 60min footage down to a 10 minute clip. But I want to be able to send that 10 minute clip in Apple Prores 422 to the editor if that makes sense...?

You can use Google Drive for that. Then he can just send you an FCPXML file via email.

This is going to sound like such a dumb question but........ what is "FCPXML file"?

XML file generated by FCPX. FCP has it's own unique flavor of XML nothing else can read (except DaVinci on occasion). Simple text file with metadata, which means it is tiny, only a few kb in size. Thus, that if you both have an identical Library, same media, etc, it will create a new Event with a new Project and assemble the edit accordingly.

I'm assuming the 10 minutes are selects and not an attempt at an actual fine edit. If the 10 minutes includes enough handles for your editor to work with, then why not export the selects timeline as a ProRes 422 4K file? If I understand correctly, your original camera files are 4K ProRes files, not actual RAW (which is a term that often gets used interchangeably with original camera footage). If so, then outputting a ProRes selects clip won't really lose anything in the translation as long as your timeline settings match your original footage codec and size. If you don't need the timecode to reference back to your original footage, then there's no reason to bother with an XML file etc. and just let your editor move forward with the selects clip.
