Help with independent fades on multiple visible clips

Help with independent fades on multiple visible clips was created by jimbobuk
Hi,
I've been trying to put together a simple video made up of 3 video clips that come in and out throughout the whole video as required. I've used Transform to let me position the 3 clips Left, Centre, and Right. I then bring the clips in and out as required.
My rough edits by blading and disabling unneeded clips are working great, I now want to try and bring in fades to each clip independently but whenever I add a fade to the top most clip in my timeline that fade is applied to the entire scene not just the clip i'm adding it too. If i manage to move the clip lower down in the timeline this problem does seem to perhaps go away however I can't move a particular clip I need to now without it offsetting the video somewhat and breaking sync, for whatever reason whilst dragging and dropping it it never shows +0 and so shifts it slightly
Is this a bug that can be worked around or is one of the clips somehow the most dominant clip for the whole video and therefore driving the fades accordingly. Is this because FCPX isn't really handling the clips as independently visible at all times in someway thinking they're meant to be replacing the main clip so should cascade their fades down to all clips?
I managed to fix this instance by duplicating my project and moving the few clips I'd already separated to put the final fade into back onto one track which then let me move them to a new lower down clip track without changing their timing, showing +0 whilst dragging. This then let me apply fades during the duration of the video as required just to that video, the only issue coming at the end when i wanted the moved video to fade later than another clip where i had to split again and move that video higher up. It does seem to work top down but I just can't fathom why.
Sorry for such a n00b question, my FCPX skills were never great and are definitely rusty when i come to use it these days.
Thanks for your time! Cheers!

Please post a screenshot of what you're doing. Which transition are you using exactly? Cross Dissolve is probably what you need.

I’m just trying to do fade to and from black at either end of the clips, I can grab a screenshot tomorrow of my timelines but until then on screen the 3 clips look like
A B C
on the timeline in the end to fix it I had to layout those clips as
A
B
C
with A and B clips lasting the entire duration of the video and the C clip being cut as described to come in and out 4 times throughout the video.
For even more context, this is a video of a song, clip A is the piano playing, clip B is the main vocals, clip C is the backing vocals that are only needed during the choruses.
The problem as originally described was when I had the clips vertically in the timeline in this order
C
A
B
and a fade for clip C would apply to the whole frame and fade out and in clips A and B.
Hope that helps describe it until I can show the timeline screenshot.

Yes, some transitions will effect everything below it, but not all. If the transition you want to use does this, make that clip/transition a Compound and it will stop effecting the clips below.
