no audio sample playback in itunes bar or sound effects bar on FCPX

Hey, I just stumbled across this forum when trying to google what is wrong with my FCPX...
I am on Mojave 10.14.6 with FCPX 10.4.9

I've found a lot of posts about people having trouble with audio files, but not anyone quite like mine.
Audio files works perfectly for me when placed on the timeline, but I can not preview (sample) them when they are still in the itunes bar, the sound effect bar or the Garage band browser here on FCPX.
The play icon shows, but it's just bouncing and no play.

Anyone experienced the same? Is it a setting I've missed, or something stupid, or something wrong?

Select the waveform in the audio browser and press the spacebar. The buttons should work after that.

Maybe I am thinking it wrong, but the Waveform is not an active option as far as I can see.

Yes this is a bug that has been around for quite a while.  Tom's solution is the workaround.
