Flow transition help - OS11.1 + MacMini M1 was created by Duncan Craig
Hello. I've come from ElCapitan and FCP10.3 happily using the MotionVFX MorphCut transition.
Now I've moved to an M1 Mac mini, and MorphCut is no longer available.
So I'm trying to use the Flow transition instead.
When I used the old MorphCut transition you'd simply drop it on, wait a moment, and you can play the transition back to see the results. Easy.
When I drop the new Flow transition onto a timeline (which contains a small jump cut in an 1080p h264 camera clip) the results aren't consistent. You can't play it back unless you render it, rendering it resulting in white flashes sometimes, if you jog through an unrendered transition the results look like it it working, but rendering and exporting are widely different.
Also my default dissolve duration is 18frames, but when I drop the Flow transition onto a cut the duration is always 1 second. If I change this to the recommended 6frames the results are still incorrect, with jump cuts and white flashes.
Can anyone suggest how they use this transition?
Thanks.

Flow does not follow default transition time, as you'd never really use it that long. It is meant to be only a few frames long. mMorph transition just got updated, check mInstaller. I'm not sure if it's M1 ready yet. I've not had issues with Flow, I use it a lot. Very odd you see flashes. Wonder if it's an M1 thing or what? Verify everything on your system is up to date.

Thanks for the reply.
I've already written this reply, but it didn't submit properly. Doh.
So to confirm when you drop on the Flow transition, it'll do a little processing and then what? Can you play through the transition in realtime, or does it need rendering? I don't understand then why everytime I add the effect it is one second long, and I can only view the results by jogging through or after rendering. The FCP manual suggests the duration should be 6 frames, is that the default you all see?
Coming from ElCapitan (an old unsupported OS) to 11.0 on M1 (cutting edge unsupported OS) isn't easy eh. I've never been able to use flow before now.
If I can get an idea who how it's supposed to work at least I'll be better informed when I feedback to Apple.
Thanks.

As for rendering the Flow transition, depends on the format of the clips you're using and the power of the Mac you're using. My very old laptop needs to render to play it back real time, my iMac Pro doesn't, with iPhone or GH4/5 H.264 clips. I have the same results using mMorph. I use Flow often with pretty good results, on clips that lend themselves to that sort of special effect.
Not sure why it's defaulting to 1 second. Not sure if it's an M1 thing or what. I'd definitely fill out the feedback page for FCP as Flow should not just show up at 1 second all the time.
Do you keep background rendering turned off?

A quick test on my other M1 machine. This one has a new install of FCPX.
When dropping on the flow transition it's 5 frames long (I'm working at 25fps).
If I change the default transition duration to anything other than 1 second then the flow transition will be that duration.
Change it back to 1 second and the flow transitions go back to being 5 frames long.
I'll go check the manual in case it's supposed to do this, and feedback to Apple.

Just tested on an iMac Pro & Big Sur & FCP 10.5.1 and I get the same thing, which is the first I've noticed this. Again, I've never changed my default transition time from 1 second, either. I'd like to see a test of this in a 10.4.x version.

The problem's in 4.10 as well. I check earlier versions in Catalina.

It's in 4.6 as well. Probably been there since the beginning. If you change the default transition duration, Flow takes whatever you set the duration to be, half a second, or two seconds.
