Make compound clip longer

Sorry for my english, am dutch speaking. How can I make my compound clip (I call it CC) longer:? I made a CC with three pieces of film. With my bottom clip it is possible to make it longer because there is enough film available (see the yellow circle on the photo). So I want to make the footage of my compound clip longer. I double click on the CC which gives me the opportunity to edit this. With the trimming tool I make my bottom clip longer, but this zone remains shaded in gray. So my CC remains the same. How can I adjust this so that my CC will be longer? It is also not possible to choose "break apart" from the timeline.

Hi Yves, welcome to the forums.

The gray area in the open CC indicates the part of the CC that is not used on the main timeline. If you want the CC to be longer,  go into the main timeline and drag out the right edge of the CC.

Hello Ronny,
Great, you are from Belgium, I from Bruges :-). it is possible to send you messages, we can speak dutch... :-)
I use FCPX for almost 2 years and I know the basics. My learning was on youtube and reading.  On my Vimeo you can see whats for me now possible :-).  Myanmar and Bolivia were my last edits.  Now I  want to learn FCPX well and that's why I joined this club.

When I go back to the timeline it's not possible on the right side to make de clip longer.. I get the red bar, see the attachment.

groetjes terug

Hi Yves,

I live in Zeebrugge at the yacht harbour, so we are practically neighbours (-:

Really strange that you cannot drag out the CC after you have made the last clip inside it longer. I just tried the same and it works. It is also strange that you cannot break apart the CC.

This used to be a bug in older versions but I haven't seen it lately. Can you tell me what version of FCP you are using?

Yveske, I constructed a compound clip like yours and it lets me extend the timeline to the end of the shaded area inside the compound clip. Please double-check this.

Note when you double-click the compound clip on the timeline to open it, the equivalent playhead location is maintained inside the compound clip. That is how you determine the corresponding points. This is only done when opening it -- if you reposition the playhead inside the compound clip, that equivalent playhead location is not maintained when closing it. But this should allow you to verify whether you are really at the end of compound clip media in the timeline. This also works for multicam clips.

Possibly not related to your current issue, but here is a good Ripple Training video on compound clip handles:
