My need here is very simple - I should be able to resume play when I switch between Event Browser and Timeline.

I'm in Event Browser in list view (Skimming turned on) playing a clip with a single monitor view (Event Viewer turned off). I hit [ CMD+2 ] to jump to the timeline and hit the SPACE BAR to resume play. Everything is fine. Now, I have to return to Event Browser and resume or play the clip that's selected so I hit [ CMD+1 ] to jump back to Event Browser and I hit SPACE BAR but nothing happens, the clip is clearly selected (I can see a thick yellow border around the clip preview bar). I'm very confused so I hit the [ L ] key and something funny happens, I only hear the audio meaning it plays in Event Viewer that is not even in my workspace. Now, in order to resume play when I toggle from the timeline, I have to hover over the mouse pointer on the Film Strip like Preview bar and then hit SPACE BAR. This behavior to me is so stupid, to say the least. ANY WORKAROUNDS?

I am on FCP 10.5.1 and MacOS 10.15.7, and switching from timeline playback to Event Browser playback works OK (in filmstrip view). I simply press CMD+2 then space bar (or L key) for timeline playback, then CMD+1 and space bar (or L key) for browser playback. JKL commands work the same in both timeline and browser.

However in list view when switching to the browser, space bar doesn't cause playback -- I have to press L. I never noticed that before because I always use JKL in the browser.

If your experience is JKL doesn't work after switching from timeline to browser, and you are on an older version of FCP, maybe it's a bug that was previously fixed. I also tested turning Browser Info on/off (CTRL+Y) , but it made no difference. I usually have Browser Info enabled because it's easier to identify the skimmer location.

If you are running a custom or modified FCP command set, CommandPost or any keyboard modifiers (or ever ran that previously), maybe that is a factor. You could also try pressing CTRL+L in the browser, which should also be mapped to "play forward". If that works but L does not work, it could be a keyboard command issue.

The L key does work but the problem is that the playback happens in Event Viewer (turned off) but not Timeline Viewer so I'm only getting audio but if bring up my Event Viewer then pressing the L key plays the clip in the Event Viewer. I'm running FCPX 10.4.9 on MAC OS 11.0.1 so maybe it's a bug. But seriously, I don't know why they decided that SPACE BAR shouldn't be used for playback in Event Browser in List View when switching from other parts of the workspace. The fact that SPACE BAR for pause/play works completely fine in all other scenarios in Event Browser is just silly.

OK, I tested some other material and I see the problem. It is clearly a bug. It only happens after the 1st switch from timeline to browser. IOW it plays OK in the Browser the 1st time. It does not happen in filmstrip mode, only list mode. It does not happen if the event viewer is up, only in single-viewer mode.

Replication scenario:

- Load any clip with both audio and video in timeline
- Have another clip with audio and video ready in Event Browser
- Viewer is in single display mode, not 2-up event viewer mode
- Switch to list view with OPT+CMD+2
- Place skimmer on browser clip with mouse
- Play skimmer via L key, see/hear video & audio
- Switch to timeline with CMD+2
- Play timeline with L key
- Switch back to browser with CMD+1
- Play browser skimmer with L key -- only audio plays, not video

It is not a new bug, but has existed since at least 10.4.6, the oldest version I have to test.

If you touch the browser skimmer location with the mouse, it will wake up and function. As a keyboard-only workaround, you can also rapidly toggle between filmstrip and list mode (OPT+CMD+2) and the list mode skimmer will then work. It's possible this could be automated with CommandPost:  commandpost.io

Edit/add: I submitted a bug report to Apple with the above description and scenario.
