Is This The Best Live Studio Recording Workflow?

Hi all,
I've recently moved from PPro to Final Cut and still finding my way around.

I'm in the process of an edit of live studio recording and have come up with a slightly convoluted way of getting what I want, but just wanted to check I'm not overcomplicating things.

We filmed a track by a band, multiple takes with different angles of the same song. Each take has a separate multi track recording which I want to be able to produce in Logic at some stage in the post-production chain. Here's the only way I've found to do it:

- Sync video and multi track recorder clips in FCP in their entirety
- Assign Roles for each of the used audio tracks
- Export as multitrack quicktime movie master file
- Import the master files back into the FCP project
- Edit with master clips
- Export master clip timeline XML
- Import FCPXML into logic
- Produce tracks in Logic and bounce finished audio
- reattach bounced audio in FCP

These feels like the only way to circumnavigate the problems that FCPXMLhas communicating either compound or multicam clips with Logic (where either it loads incorrectly or doesn't load at all)

Thought it might be helpful to share on here, either because it's useful to someone else OR maybe someone knows a simpler workflow

Thanks,
Sam

Would you not want to make a multicam of the angles/takes?  You can wrap the multicam audio in that as well

Hi Peter,
That's how I started and yes it would be much easier to edit the footage that way. Unfortunately neither compound nor multicam clips play well in Logic and there's no option to flatten the multicam clips.

Ok, how about exporting a video only master, bringing that back in and laying it over the top?  Maybe assign. role to it and then you can turn it on/off?

It sounds to me like the mixing down of the music piece is overly complicated. And if each take was the band playing live, you're going to have timing issues. I'm a composer, I've work a lot of music videos over the past 25 years, and live musicians don't play at the same tempo each time, and they drift.

Mix the song down, have one music clip, then Multicam all the video with it. Mix the song in Logic, do the video work in FCP.

Or am I missing something?

It is a little complicated, but it has worked! Key thing for me was to emulate a multi cam set up.

No timing issues as the performers were playing to a backing track. If I mixed down the track first without regard to the picture then I think the music would not match the picture perfectly (there were lots of close ups). I guess I could have pulled the audio around manually to match the picture, maybe that would have been quicker.

Other times I have mixed down separately and got the performers to lip synch (which was loads quicker), but wanted to try out something different.
