I am all for the new 3d tracker from Motionvfx. I typically track with Syntheyes which is pretty good although the licensing is a night mare. And the interface is deep but also very confusing.
TYpically for a decent track you have to do a bit of work removing incorrect trackers and orienting scenes. I am pretty good at it now - getting a typical 10 second track done in 10 minutes and then exporting a MOTION 3d camera which i can drop Motion's excellent 3d text, texturing and lighting into.
I would love for this to be easier and Motion vfx LOOKs like its just "click and collect" - although Mark Spencer hinted that in his demo he had to do a lot of tweaking to correct drifting / sliding in the tracks. Or that the autio tracks weren't that solid (reding between the lines of some of his comments)
Has anyone tried the plug in yet? I would love it if they released a watermarked demo version.

Join the mO2 Users Group on Facebook, lots and lots and lots of discussion about mTracker3D there, folks doing much what you're wanting to do. And there are tutorials, including how to prep for tracking.
Here's an unofficial list of resources which includes links to the FB group and user manual.

As Ben wrote have a look to FB mO2 Group user . IMHO mO2 and mTracker 3D are amazing plugins and very increible what you can get within fcp/motion ecosystem. I have not yet much experience (mTracker was released a few weeks) but I’ve very satisfied with exercises and trials . Follow the motionvfx youtube tutes.
PD: I think that works better in motion that in fcp.....

I had a look and joined the Facebook group
and what i am seeing is a whole bunch of very average tracks - its certainly not a click and forget process. In fact for someone like myself that knows Syntheyes reasonably well i would say better results can be gained there.
Syntheyes will track and solve a 15 second scene in a matter of seconds (once its set up)- allow a few minutes for tracker deletion and refinement and you are good to go. For some reason Mtracker 3d seems to take ages to crunch the data. And even then people are getting dodgy tracks - probably because the algorithm cant yet replace a human that knows to remove tracks that follow , for example, a gleaming highlight that moves on a reflective surface, the water, trees moving in the wind etc etc All of which have to be removed to lock down your solution so it looks convincing.
the fact is 3d tracking is quite complex conceptually and executionally and it doesn't look like this problem has been cracked - yet.
I so wanted this to work as I do a lot of tracking for real estate video and it would have been a huge time saver. I really hate the SYntheyes licensing, which assumes everyone is a criminal out to steal their code- even when you have paid for their license.
i will say that Mtracker 3d looks like good value for people coming into this with limited knowledge - but expect to have to learn how to refine your tracks to make them convincing. I would imaging being able to go into motion's keyframe editor will be the way to do that.

Yes, mTracker3D is a brand spanking new product that is working out bugs and costs $249 and will do tracking in mO2 for Motion and FCPX.
Yes, Syntheyes has been around for years working out bugs and costs $499 and you can't use 3D models in Motion nor FCPX.
You are correct, sir. Apples to oranges IMHO...

I am not anti Mtracker 3d by any means. Personall yi would have preferred if they focussed more on the tracking part rather than all the donuts and crazy 3d stuff. A big percentage of 3d tracking for actual corporate production / paid work is simple 3d text composited into well shot (often drone or gimbal) planned out shots.
I think MotionVFX could have sold a lot of these plug ins at this price point if the 3d tracking was simple and relatively accurate the first time. Something i was hoping new technology and algorithms could deliver us. Syntheyes interface is quite franky terrible (for a $500 software) and its complexity will put off most users.
So i reckon there is still a big opportunity there for MotionVFX - i use a lot of their plug ins regularly (Mfilm Look, Mcall outs etc) and I really like the direction they are going in.

Personally, I'm having a blast with this plugin. It does slip and slide a bit but theses are early times and hopefully it will improve.

The system must analyze a 2D image and extrapolate 3D coordinates from that, it's not a fast nor easy thing to accomplish. I'm using mTracker3D now and am enjoying it, but depending on the image, results can vary. That's just the mechanics of it. Syntheyes works better with some footage than with others. And mTracker3D is made for 3D work, so yeah, I use it to put 3D objects into 2D shots.
They will be coming out with mTracker2D eventually, also.
But we're talking about very complex operations here, so yeah, they're going to give mixed results. Watch the tutorials, especially his one talking about how to selected and treat your original 2D shot first.
