Generate EDL or XML showing changes from one clip to another?

Hi, I am taking a class on audio/video post production and I have a project where I am given an original video with audio stems, in which case the video and audio are in sync. I am also given a trimmed version of the video (which includes a stereo audio track of audio that matches the trimmed video).

My task is to use the original stems and conform them to the trimmed video.

I understand to do this I should try and create an XML or EDL file that contains the change info. Can FCP generate this sort of comparison between two clips?

thanks!

Hi, I think that requires one has the change list. What I have is audio for the edited video as well as audio of the original video and was trying to automatically generate info about when the audio differs and when they match. So imagine a video that has been trimmed here and there. So scenes cut out, etc.  The audio from the edited video is like a subset of the original audio. That is, all of the audio in the edited version is contained in the original version. That is why I was looking for some conforming approach that looks at the audio, but I suppose in that case I don't even need to do that in FCP I should probably just use audio tools.

I think you could be quite clever here by chopping the stems up at picture changes- then they would attach themselves to the moved video. Also many a time I've had to overlay a master over an edit and then reduce the opacity to see both playing. (Thinking about this Frame.io allows side by side version watching)

Whatever method, it's not going to be quick!

Do it in FCP, it'll be as fast (if not slightly faster) than an "audio tool".  This is a manual process, you need to just sit down and do the work.  There are not automatic buttons for everything (yet).  Peter has the right advice.

I don't know if your video clips have audio, if they do, SyncClips or Mutlicams would help match them audiomatically.  Then you just cut out what you don't need.  You'd be left with usable clips.  But still, it's not just one mouse-click and they're done, it will take time, no matter what.
