Thats a lot of subtitles to try and change- I'm amazed FCP even responds!

Can you not bulk alter the existing title?  Select all then modify in the inspector?

What attribute of the text are you trying to change? Maybe there is another way?
I just tried to replace a title with a preset from the browser and it didn't change the length. Have you tried a diff preset apart from the 'custom title' preset?
