All of my clips look great when un-rendered, but after rendered they look horribly blocky and compressed. This looks the same exported, and doesn't change whether or not I view in "performance" or "quality' mode.
Anyone else having this issue? I've tried with different effects both built-in and third party with no difference. Even something like just the color board results in this compressed rendering.

All fine on my side, no issues.
The export will look the same as the render because it creates a "new" video file. Are you sure you are not working with Proxies Preferred in your project.

Weird. Definitely not using proxies.
The unrendered version is sharper and looks as expected, the rendered version is the one that looks horribly compressed. Just updated to 10.5 to see if they fixed some odd bug, but no change!
Thanks

man... what can we tell you .
you made the basic professional mistake to update frenetiquely your system. and now you are coming here.
it's been said a hundred thousand times , specially regarding plugins,
answer is "go back on Catalina"

@peteramwiggins SHUCKS, I should have checked that first...
I haven't used FCPX seriously since 10.14.9 and somehow my codec got turned to 'blank' — just empty. Turning that to ProRes 422 fixed it.
Thank you!!
