How to delete files inside library?

I have been importing files with copy files to library, so I have duplicates of everything. Now I don't want that anymore. So, how to I delete files from the library?

With one library, I just deleted the library, and then transferred the backup file to my disc. I only had to relink the files. Easy. But now, I can't find the backup file for this library. The backup-folder is there, but it won't update. So now I need to delete the files inside the library in order to just relink the files. How can I do this?

To move media outside of the library, you should define an external storage location using the FCPX library inspector, Storage Locations>Modify Settings>Media, and create or select a folder. Then press the Consolidate button. If the new media location is on the same disk volume, FCPX will use "hard links", the transfer will be very fast since it simply creates new file system links. It will not take up additional space during the interim period if the new media location is on the same drive and if that drive is formatted HFS+ or APFS.

See this video for details: "Consolidate Media Outside (Externally) of a Final Cut Pro X Library":

My hard drive is Mac OS extended (journal). Is that OK, or should it be AFPS?

I have the original files in a folder on the same drive as my library. And inside the library I have duplicates of this files. When I consolidate, the files inside will be moved, correct? But If they are moved outside the library, will there be duplicates outside the library as well?

MacOS Extended Journaled is HFS+. You don't need APFS. You don't want ExFAT or anything else because FCPX cannot use hard link optimization on those.

Yes when you define an external media storage location in FCPX library manager, then consolidate, the files will be moved outside the library to your designated location.

When FCPX imports files it sometimes must rename them to avoid duplicate filenames. In those cases the files will have (fcp1), (fcp2), etc appended to them. Also some files are re-wrapped if imported within the library, which slightly changes the internal composition. Thus in some cases you cannot re-link to the original camera files because those were altered by FCPX during the copy to library.

This illustrates why the best procedure is often to import with "leave files in place". For tree-oriented media such as AVCHD that does not allow that, it's often best to externally re-wrap those with EditReady2, then import to FCPX with "leave files in place": www.divergentmedia.com/editready

Awesome, thank you! :)

I noticed that FCPX actually deletes the original files from my original folder (where I transferred the files from the camera) when FCPX moves the files from the library to a new folder in the same hard drive.

From now on, I will leave the files in place.
