In the past when the playback of the timeline would become choppy due to added effects, transitions etc i could pre render affected files to alleviate this. At the moment pre rendering has zero effect. Re installation of FCPX had no effect.

I just noticed this yesterday. Never saw this before. Maybe a new bug introduced with 10.4.10?

I've deleted pref and render files, still, rendering a timeline, or part of one, has zero effect.

Exactly same here. It has been bugging me for about 4 months now so not new. I thought it was an issue with my hdd. I moved my work flow to all SDD setup and discovered that this was happening.
