FCP keeps hanging

Hello,
I am new to FCPX so I may have made a rookie mistake.
I am having serious problems with FCPX which is constantly hanging. I am trying to make video walls using Lucas FX. I have one made 3 so far (but is hard going) with 77, 36, 31 images. I have a MacPro 2019, 16 core, AMD Radeon Pro Vega II 32GB. I initially made one library and imported all the media (300+ four minutes). I made ProPes Proxies and changed my view to Proxie only. After the first video wall it has just been hanging, I could be in the browser and click onto a clip, or after I've populated a wall. After these issues I have been trying to create smaller libraries one per video wall to see if that helps, but it hangs as I try to do this.

Hope someone out there has more experience with video walls.

Thanks

This is possibly a bug in the Luca Visual FX. Plugin Fx are generally in two categories: (1) Motion templates and (2) Custom coded using Objective-C or Swift. Those in category 2 use the Apple FxPlug 3 framework, which runs the 3rd-party code within the address space of FCPX. Any bug in any plugin can hang or crash FCPX. This is obviously an architecturally poor design and the plan is to improve this with FxPlug 4 which will enable running that code in a separate "sandboxed" address space: developer.apple.com/documentation/profes..._applications/fxplug

For now you are already taking good initial troubleshooting steps. No developer wants to be presented with a large, complex haystack, and that will typically not result in fast action.

Rather trim down the replication scenario to the smallest, simplest one possible. The smallest dataset, the fewest effects, whether it requires a certain codec, etc. While requiring time and work, this has to big benefits:

(1) When presented with the small, portable replication scenario, the developer is more likely to prioritize that.

(2) In the process of trimming the scenario you will find workarounds.

I also suggest you contact Lucas FX support and/or FXFactory support (assuming that's how you obtained it). I previously had good experience with FxFactory support, who were very responsive and helpful.

The Lucas Fx or FxFactory support may ask you to take various diagnostic dumps and send those in. E.g, for an FCPX hang, you can take a "spindump" using Activity Monitor by selecting the hung process, clicking the "gear" icon and pick Spindump. This generates stack traces for each thread in the hung process. Interpreting this requires a high level of skill, generally by a senior support engineer or developer.

Also evaluate any other plugins you are using. Update those (esp. any from CoreMelt) and remove any old plugins you no longer use.

Do not run Chrome or any browser based on Chrome such as Brave. Chrome mis-uses the MacOS VideoToolBox framework, causing unpredictable hangs or crashes.

If you are not running the latest FCPX version 10.4.10, certain HEVC codec versions may cause a hang or crash.

Thank you for your reply.
I actually started breaking the job into libraries with one library per video wall. I think I'll then export and work with those clips to limit the amount of effects it being used by one project. Have build three walls with no problems so far, will see how far this process takes me moving forward.
