I have attempted several times to record a live voice track to the timeline in FCP using a dynamic RE-50 microphone but to no avail. I have followed the procedure according to the manual. Is a preamp required?

What am I missing?

How is the mic connected to your Mac? All you should need is a good audio i/o unit. Most all of them have built-in preamps.

Thanks for your response.

My RE-50 dynamic mic is connected to an XLR in turn to a USB into an USB hub. The hub mike make the difference, however, my internal mics on my iMac 27" will not record onto the FCP timeline either.

What coverts your XLR to USB? Please, specific details.

Thanks for your response. I will send you a screen shot soon. I feel that something is missing in my FCP setup since my internal iMac mics also do not respond. I use a new XLR to USB mic cable going directly into my iMac 27".

I must add that an audio track is recorded onto the timeline, however, the track itself does not contain any audio. This is the case with both the internal mics and the external RE-50 mic.

I've never seen it not work. I'd have to see all your settings. What is the audio set to in your System Preferences?

A dynamic mic needs a preamp to work properly. The connection should be Canon to preamp usb to computer. Your description does not include a preamp

Thank you for your response to my question regarding recording VO in the timeline of FCP. I will check my audio settings in Preferences. This must be where the problem lies since I am also unable to use the internal mics on my iMac. I was also informed on this forum that I must use a preamp on my RE-50 mic.

I'd get the Mac's built-in mic to start working first, as that shows an issue that's unrelated to a mic preamp. Again, screenshots would help a lot. Do you have your setting set up like this?

Thank you for your response. Yes, precisely. Exactly as your screen-grab indicates. I get a blank audio track on the timeline but no audio. I also closed FCP and then reopened it again. So in order to continue with my project I am going to use an external SD card recorder and then transfer the audio track directly to the timeline.

I have checked my audio preferences, my new XLR to USB cable, my RE-50 mic with a preamp and nothing will provide me with an audio track in the timeline. I merely get a blank track, no signal. I then attempted to use the iMac's internal mics but encountered the same problem. This should be a very simple procedure....mic to USB to computer to timeline. Any more suggestions? I will check this forum again in the morning with the hope that there is an answer. Thank you all.

In desperation I purchased a Cardioid mic with a USB connector thinking that this might be the problem. Not the problem. To repeat: I do receive an audio track on the timeline but there is no signal on it. This is the case even when attempting to use the iMac's internal mics. All of my preference setting are as the screen-grab above indicate. Any additional thought would be most appreciated. Thanks.
