Question: When editing, it frequently happens that the timeline zooms out, unprompted. How to prevent that?

Don't press Command - maybe? But I'm guessing that's not your issue. What kind of funky keyboard/mouse setup do you have? A wheel or a button somewhere may be assign to the zooming. Check your shortcut preferences under File > Commands > Customized. If it's on DEFAULT and not CUSTOMIZE then there could be something that needs to be addressed with your mouse software in the System Preferences.
