motion running painfully slow

Not sure what's going on, but motion is very running slow. When i try to move something it take a few seconds for it to actually move. fcpx is running normal, so i don't think its my computer. tried rebooting. I don't have any recently added plugins for motion. any suggestions are welcome. thanks
