Hi. I run both an iMac and MacBook Pro and switch between them throughout the day. My computers link to my network via wireless.

I am finding that if I am working on the same FCP project on both machines I am having to copy projects backwards and forwards which is a pain. I was thinking of installing an external hard drive or my network and allowing the two computer to share it. However I am a little unsure of a couple of matters and would welcome other peoples advice.

Would I be able to work satisfactorily on projects via wireless or will I find that I am continually dropping frames?

Would my router need to be anything special? I can get on that offers 10GBe to which the external hard drove could be connected.

What others issues might I possibly enoucnter?

Any recommendations on hardware?

Very many thanks for helping this newbie

You want a secondary drive to start with, as Libraries and media on your system drive actually tax your OS more.

You don't need to move the whole project, just export an XML file and move that. It's a tiny text file that copies in the blink of an eye.

WiFi isn't fast enough to support editing video over, period.

Learn to use XML, or get an external drive. But that external drive needs to be fast enough. Not all are.

Hi and thanks for your post
If I understand correctly, wifi is out. (I can understand that) so I am down to an external drive, probably a 1 TB SSD.

I am not sure that I understand your comment regarding the XML file, as yes I can copy the xml between the two computers, as you say, in the blink of an eye. But if I have started a project on the desktop and want to continue in the evening on the laptop, I will still need to move all of the media files as well.

I guess I will just have to put up with the ssd hanging off my laptop. My original thought was to have the SSD located on my network so that it could stay static and the two computers just connect to it, but given that I cant do that hardwired I dont have a lot of option.

Thanks for your help
