external HD crashed how to save the project? was created by angyalka
Hello everyone. I am learning finalcut pro and I have made the biggest mistake at my second project...I saved only onto one HD...I know I know. I have been beating myself up ever since, not a mistake made ever again...
The last footage I had on my camera memory card (I re-linked them and they work) and when I look at the project I can see some of the footage. I shared those footage as a masterfile and it exist now as move file. This way I could save some of the lost files at least...My question is: should I start a new project or should I re-shoot the missing files, and just add them on the timeline? Thank you for your help!!! Have a great day!

You should not have exported those files. Select one in the Browse, right-click, "Show In Finder" and it'd take you to the original inside the Library package. Collect those up. And while inside the Library package, you would probably see the ones FCPX thinks are missing. Collect it all up. Then open one of your backups.
FCPX backs up to a folder called Final Cut Backups inside of your Movies folder. It only backs up the database files needed to reconstruct your work, NOT the actual media files. Then you Relink to your original media files.
You can also, and this is touchy, cause if you change the wrong thing, the whole Library is hosed, right-click the Library itself in the Finder, select Show Package Contents. Find the Original Media folder inside of there.
